What is a Hero?

A Hero is an extraordinary person. They act as a support to vulnerable Members of our community such as the elderly, those with Disability and those with Chronic Illness or Injury. 

They are a mentor, big brother or sister, a mate - a person you can rely on. 

As a Hero, you are connected through the platform to a Member of your local community in order to share your passions, talents and skills to improve and support their everyday life. 

Who are Heroes?

Our Heroes come from all walks of life! We have students, parents, retirees, working professionals and more!

Our Heroes don’t require any qualifications apart from a willingness to learn and passion for helping others. 

What services do Heroes provide?

Our Heroes can provide:

  • Companionship
  • Community Access Support
  • Skills Training
  • Meal Preparation
  • Light Errands and Chores
  • Transport
  • Assistance with Sports and Exercise

Heroes cannot provide Personal Care.

What is Personal Care?

Personal Care is any form of support that involves nudity (i.e. changing, showering, toileting) or administering medication. 

Is a Hero paid or is it a volunteer role?

Our Heroes are paid $27.30 per hour, less $0.45 cents to cover insurance. 

Is a Hero the same as a Support Worker?

No! A Hero is not the same as a Support Worker. We expect our Heroes to provide long-lasting relationships and supports, leaving a big impact on a Members life that goes further than everyday supports. You will have the freedom to be creative and take initiative in organising activities. 

I would love to join your community but can’t work right away - can I still become a Hero?

Of course! As a Hero, once you are accepted, you can set your profile to unavailable so that you can remain on the system and a part of the community but have the flexibility not to work for periods if you are unavailable. 

What is the minimum age to become a Hero?

The minimum age is 18 years old. 

Do I need to be an Australian Citizen to become a Hero?

No, you do not need to be an Australian Citizen. You do however need to be remaining in the country for a period longer than 6 months. 

Do I need qualifications to become a Hero?

No, our Heroes don’t require any qualifications apart from a willingness to learn and passion for helping others. 

Do I need an ABN? 

You need to register for an Australian Business Number (ABN) otherwise we’re required to take out tax from your pay at the highest rate.

In order to register for an ABN: Go to https://abr.gov.au/ to apply for free, online. You’ll need your Tax File Number (TFN) and it will take about 5 minutes.

When registering for an ABN, do I need to register for Goods and Services Tax (GST)?

You’ll need to register for Goods and Services Tax (GST) so that we can make the invoicing easier, and to comply with ATO regulations.
You can register for GST at the same time you register for an ABN above; or if you already have an ABN, you can register for GST online via the Business Portal  https://bp.ato.gov.au/  or (probably simpler) by phone on 13 28 66.

During the year when you work for us we’ll send you a copy of what’s called a Recipient Created Tax invoice (RCTI) - an invoice from you to HCH when you do work. Because we’re in the care industry there will be no GST (ie $0) on these invoices. At the end of the year, despite their being no GST charged you’ll need to report this fact to the ATO lodging a “NIL” (ie $0) annual GST return.
